- Remove all trash and debris from the yard and around the house exterior walls.
- Inspect exterior walls for loose shutters, trim, flashing, downspouts, etc. Repair or replace.
- Clean leaves trash and other materials from gutters and roof. Re-secure loose pins and ferrules on gutter.
- Inspect roof shingles, metal, or other roof. Pay particular attention to flashing around chimneys, dormers, vent a ridge, attic ventilation fans, plumbing vent stacks, skylights. Repair or replace all that is loose or missing even if the roof is not leaking now. These materials are there for a reason. Replacement will prevent future leaks and water damage.
If you are not able or comfortable being on a roof to make these inspections, use a pair of low powered binoculars for close up viewing. This is simple and safe. After your assessment, you can decide which professional you need to call to make repairs.

Listener Mailbag: The Best Way to Spruce Up a Septic Area
Question:
I would like to plant ornamental grasses, flowers, etc. on our septic field area. Are these plants acceptable for this area (I know I cannot plant trees because of the roots disturbing the pipes below). Do I need to plant in raised boxes? I would also like to add small pebbles or crushed stone instead of mulch. Will this be acceptable too for this area and allow the soil to breathe? Thanks for your help.
