We have a lot of trees so my question is about gutter guards. Do they really work? Any recomadations on a certain kind? Do you have to remove them to clean or can they be installed and forgotten?
Unfortunately there is no such thing as a gutter product that can be installed and forgotten. There are several different types of gutter guards and products designed to keep debris out, but even the most effective of these products needs to be at least inspected on an annual basis to make sure they have not shifted, blown away, been broken or become clogged.
Gutter screens are affordable and easy to install, but allow smaller particles to enter the gutter and must be cleaned regularly.
Foam gutter inserts are an affordable choice and keep out most large debris and are relatively easy to clean with a hose, but may blow away.
Advanced gutter protection systems do an excellent job on keeping out debris but are expensive to install and must still be regularly inspected and maintained.
To see which products are working best for other home owners, I recommend consulting with a review website or magazine such as Consumer Reports or Google. This is a great way to get direct feedback from other people who have installed the product without getting a bunch of sales and advertising jargon from the manufacturer. In short, research the product you’re interested in to see what has worked well for others. Additionally, once you’ve selected a product, go online or write a letter to review the product so others can benefit from your experience.
